Are you looking to join an orchestra or a choir? Whether you sing or play HMS will be pleased to welcome you. All we ask of our members is that they should be enthusiastic and committed.
We rehearse together from September to May on Monday evenings from 7.30pm, orchestra and chorus initially working separately but coming together to rehearse as we approach a concert. In June, we also meet for a number of Summer Sessions (open rehearsals), working with invited conductors.
HMS Members pay an annual subscription which we use to cover our regular rehearsal costs (Hire of rehearsal venues, professional help). This covers all rehearsals (apart for the summer sessions) along with all the necessary music parts and scores. We don't want anyone to feel unable to make music with us for financial reasons, and so bursaries and payment plans are available on request.
Are you a singer? Join the Chorus!
New Chorus members are welcome at any time (sopranos, altos, tenors and basses) and unlike some choirs we do not hold formal auditions. Chorus Mistress, Catherine Olver is actively welcoming new members to join the Chorus. She says: "we are recruiting singers in every voice to join our mixed chorus.
What do we offer:
- Free membership for 18-25 year olds
- 3 concerts per year alongside HMS orchestra
- A varied choral repertoire ranging from Bach and Mozart to 20th and 21st century works

Are you a player? Join the Orchestra!
The Orchestra currently has a vacancy for an Oboe. This includes opportunities to play cor anglais. We also like to offer a suitably qualified player an opportunity to to perform with us as a soloist in a future concert if they wish.
The Orchestra gives four main concerts in Haslemere per year.
We cover a wide repertoire and three of the concerts include both orchestral and choral works where we work with HMS Chorus.
We would expect the successful candidate to make a regular commitment to the orchestra.
There will be a short informal audition with James Ross, the Society’s Music Director (two short contrasting works or orchestral excerpts - c 4-5 minutes maximum total, and some standard repertoire sight reading), We would also expect you to play in a tutti rehearsal in the Haslemere Hall in September.
Other Vacancies
In addition, we currently have vacancies in the following sections:
- Strings: Violins and violas
- Brass: Trumpets, trombones, and tuba
- Percussion: Timpani
There are no auditions for strings and if you are G7+, even if you have taken a break, do come along to a rehearsal and meet us. Other instrumentalists are welcome to inquire about extra playing and deputising opportunities.
